Theatre Three, Broadway on Main Street is yet another regional theater on Long Island that I had never been to.  It is a National Historic Landmark in the heart of Port Jefferson.  An article in Newsday alerted us to a performance of "Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street."  Having enjoyed the original Broaadway production with Angela Lansbury, and having now seen some wonderful local productions I was more than happy to purchase tickets for some friends, my husband and myself.

The theater is located on Main Street.  There is no dedicated parking lot.  The gentleman at the box office told us that parking was OK in the evening in the lot next door.  We found four handicapped spaces in the paved lot in front of some stores.  If you are lucky you might find parking on the street.

Street level souble doors led to the box office entrance, with another set of doors to the lobby area.  We found a large, carpeted living room-like area to the left, where people were waiting for the doors to open. A single-occupancy, handicapped-accessible restroom is located in this area.  Walking down five steps led us to a set of multi-stall restrooms as well as the entrance to the Comedy Club that occupies the lower level of the building.

When the eater doors opened for seating we were somewhat surprised to find that we had to walk up 12 carpeted steps to get to any e seats.  A lift is available if needed.  Once at theater level there are no more steps. We found wide aisles and spacious seats.  If you have center seats, no one has to get up for you to pass.  What a pleasure! I guess things were more spacious 140 years ago.

At intermission one must go downstairs for drinks and snacks.  It was at this time that we discovered another set of men's and women's restrooms to the right of the stairs in the lobby.

Once again we enjoyed a terrific performance on a Long Island stage.  It even had a seven-piece orchestra accompaniment.

As always, we at Destination:Accessible advise you to check a venue's website, www.theatrethree.com, when planning a visit, to "know you go."
