Destination:Accessible has led us to many places that we have not been to in many years.  This Christmas we decided to attend the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  It certainly lived up to its title.  Both the show and venue were exceptional.

Radio City Music Hall is located in the heart of Rockefeller Center.  In 1929, John D. Rockefeller owned a large piece of property here.  After the stock market crashed he wanted to raise people's hopes.  He partnered with architects and designers to create ""a palace for the people.  A place of beauty offering high-quality entertainment at prices ordinary people could afford."" (website)  The project was completed on December 27, 1932 and became a showplace of the nation.  It achieved landmark status in 1978.  It underwent a complete renovation in 1999.  The entire location is a truly beautiful display of elegant art deco design.

Radio City Music Hall is largest indoor theater in the world.  It is a place for movies, concerts and other events.  Today we are focusing on the Christmas Spectacular  Everyone should experience it at least once.  The theater itself has everything.  It is beautifully decorated for the holidays. There are concession stands with souvenirs, drinks, snacks, and separate candy stands.  Santa is also on hand to listen to your hopes and dreams.  Of course, the place is crowded, but it is exciting to see so many people, and the venue is magical.

The show changes from year to year, but some routines are always included.  The Rockettes perform their amazing March of the Wooden Soldiers at every performance.  This year technology ruled!  We had to put on 3D glasses the view the opening act.

Radio City Music Hall created a disabled services department to insure that everyone can have an enjoyable experience.  Look at their excellent website for detailed descriptions and contact information.

The street level entrance on 50th Street has an automatic door opener.  There is another door with an automatic opener into the  foyer.  Orchestral level seating is easy to get to with wide aisles and a slight incline.  Upper level seating has steps. The theater was constructed in such a fashion that there are no ""bad seats.""   There are elevators to take you to the mezzazine levels and lower level Grand Lounge. The restrooms, which look exactly as they did when first constructed, are located here. There is seating in a lounge area just outside the commode area. The restroom has two handicapped accessible stalls.  One has a sink, hand dryer, mirror and grab bars.  There are multi-stall, handicapped accessible restrooms on the other floors as well.

It is very difficult to describe this venue fully because it is unique.  We believe it should be experienced in person.

As always, we at Destination:Accessible advise you to check a venue's website, www.radiocity.com, when planning a visit, to ""know before you go.""
